The Scene for November 7, 2008

We've elected a new President, re-aligned Congress, made history by finally fulfilling the visions of our fore-fathers and the hopes of the Civil Rights Movement, and woke up to brisk, clear weather. Not a bad way to begin November.

A lot of plays are running, and the long-awaited 24 Hour Theatre Festival is finally here.

the reviews

The Sun-Sentinel had Bill Hirschman review Broward Stage Door's latest offering of Lucky Stiff.
Once upon a time, theatergoers did not demand a flying witch or a falling chandelier for their ticket; they were satisfied with a quiet, entertaining musical comedy that warmed the funny bone, tickled the heart and mixed its metaphors.

Broward Stage Door's Lucky Stiff is precisely that kind of evening.

Bill finds numerous performances worth mentiong, and has high praise for the director:
Veteran director/choreographer Michael Leeds has injected scores of inventive grace notes making fun of cheesy theatrical artifice, including props made of cardboard cutouts with drawings attached.
Lucky Stiff runs through December 7 in Coral Springs.

openings

The Naked Stage opens NERVE, this Friday, November 7.

The Caldwell Theatre presents the classic musical She Loves Me. It opens Sunday, November 9th. Kevin D. Thompson of the Palm Beach Post speaks with artistic director Michael Hall about it

The 24 Hour Theatre Project is this Monday, November 10. Presented by The Naked Stage at Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre. If you only go to theater one day a year, this is particularly fitting.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre opens Noises Off on November 11. Since it only runs for two weeks, I'm giving you an early heads-up. I think it's been 25 years since we've had a professional production in the region.
