The Burt Reynolds Institute for Film & Theatre (BRIFT) has announced the formation of a new professional theatre troupe, The Burt Reynolds Under-the-Bridge Players.
“Developing a new producing theatre company has always been very important to Mr. Reynolds,” said Kenneth Kay, Executive Director of BRIFT. “It is also a key component of our mission as a professional arena to create jobs and establish a first-class training facility for aspiring artists.”
The first season for the Under-the-Bridge Players will kick off Thursday, December 10th with a rare stage appearance by Burt Reynolds starring in a staged reading of William Luce’s celebrated play Barrymore, which is about legendary actor, John Barrymore.
“It’s one legend, Burt Reynolds acting out the life of another legend, John Barrymore,” said Kay. “I can’t think of any better way to begin our first season.”
This production of "Barrymore" is being billed as a preview production.
“Mr. Reynolds is looking forward to taking a fully produced production of Barrymore out to a few other venues within the region,” said Kay
Barrymore will run for only three performances through December 12th.
All performances for the new troupe will be staged in the Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum located just north of the drawbridge on East Indiantown Road in Jupiter.
“Seating in the museum will be limited to approximately sixty seats providing patrons with very intimate theatre experience,” said Kay.
The second play will be The Santaland Diaries by David Sedaris, a holiday comedy that will open December 15th and run through December 19th.
The Pulitzer Prize winner, The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn is the third production. Directed by Burt Reynolds, The Gin Game will be performed January 26th through January 30th.
Burt’s Briefs or An evening of very short plays! will open February 24th and runs through February 27th. Featuring plays by several authors including Michael McKeever, a South Florida favorite, Burt’s Briefs promises to be a laugh-filled highlight of the first season.
The Belle of Amherst, another Luce classic, will be the fifth production. This award-winning play about the noted writer Emily Dickinson has been praised as a play full of “full of passion, poetry and heart.”
The Belle of Amherst will open March 24th and run through March 27th.
The premiere season for the Under-the-Bridge Players will conclude with Almost Maine, a fresh new comedy by John Cariani. Almost Maine will feature many actors from the BRIFT Master Acting Class and will play April 28th through May 1st.
