Bit of a chore putting together your Monday reading list this week; our twitter feed was overrun by BroadwayWorld and TheaterMania, who were both live-tweeting the Drama Desk Awards last night. BTW, congratulations to all the DramaDesk Award winners.
Here's your face-eating-cannibal-free reading list:
...And The Winner Is...
Dan Leonard is the winner of the Actors' Playhouse Page to Stage competition. Read about it on Florida Theater On Stage. Most of us know Dan as an actor, but he penned numerous children's plays for The Learning Stage, the educational component of the late Florida Stage, for many years. He's also toured his one-man biopic of Ernie Pyle. Congratulations, Dan; look forward to the reading.
It's Not a Green Story
Broadway World reports that New Theater is about to open A Bicycle Country,
a play by Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Nilo Cruz. The play,
commissioned by The Public Theater, had its premiere at Florida Stage
back in 1999. It'll be nice to see it with South Florida actors.
Your Theatre Scene Pointless Degrees of Separation.
Evelyn Perez will be appearing in New Theatre's A Bicycle Country,
which premiered at Florida Stage. Remember when we mentioned that
Florida Stage used to produce children's plays through its educational
wing, The Learning Stage? Perez appeared in Dropping Out, a play penned by Page to Stage winner Dan Leonard. He also performed in it.
Just for the hell of it; this gives Perez a Kevin Bacon factor of five: Perez appeared with Leonard in Dropping Out; Leonard appeared with Barbara Bradshaw in The Chairs; Bradshaw dated Kyle MacLachlan back... well, back - MacLachlan appeared in Perfume with Kylie Bax, who appeared with Bacon in We Married Margo.
'Sup with Shorts
The Miami New Times discusses this year's Summer Shorts with City Theater's artistic director John Manzelli. And while Summer Shorts will be staying in Miami this year, TheaterMania tells us about The Brand New Kid, City Theatre's co-production with Orlando Repertory, which is playing all over the place.
Stuff You Should Know
Butts in Seats has some useful information for those of us working for arts organizations; vacation and overtime.
Up For Some Dough
Florida Theatre On Stage fills us in on the Knight Foundation grant finalists; lots of familiar names, and lots of deserving projects. One of the most intriguing is the cooperative scene shop venture proposed by Mad Cat producer Ann Kelly; it's a facility intended to be shared among several smaller companies that can't afford an equipped space of their own.
In the Sandbox
The Drama Queen tells us about the current offering at The Playground Theatre's SandBox; Conquest of the Stage, a Man Research Theatre Company production. Runs through this weekend.
Plaza Dazzle
In the spirit of the general manager of the former theater that occupied the space, we'd call the show THE WAY WE DON'T RAIN ON THE NATURAL WOMAN BENEATH MY BOOGIE WOOGIE WINGS. But it's The Plaza Theatre now, and The Shiny Sheet reports that the title of the revue is Don't Rain on our Parade: A Tribute To Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Carole King.
Edge-ing to the End
Broadway World reminds us that the final play in Mosaic Theatre's 2011-2012 season is Adam Rapp's The Edge of our Bodies.
Talk About Lead Time
TheaterMania reports that the Coral Springs Center for the Arts has booked in Mike Birbiglia's one man show, My Girlfriend's Girlfriend, for January 25, 2013. Write it down! Because frankly, we'll forget all about it looooong before then.
